Things to do in Gili Islands
Gili islands diving
There are many dive centers and many shack operations lining the beaches and also provide rent snorkeling equipment for half a day.
Most visitors stay on Gili Trawangan for the facilities and make the short hop out to the dive sites. Each dive school has its own fleet of traditional outrigger boats that ferry divers offshore to the walls and reefs where the best diving is to be found.
Gili Meno is located in the middle of Lombok’s three northwest coasts. It’s the smallest island and you can even walk along the beaches of Gili Meno for only two hours.
This island has population of 500 people which main income is derived from tourism, fishing and also coconut plantation. The freshwater is rare in the island and has to be brought by boat from Lombok. There are no cars and motorbike. This island attracts fewer tourist compared to Gili Trawangan since it’s still underdeveloped. Gili Meno has swimming beaches and also a bird sanctuary.
Even though this island is not as famous as Gili Trawangan, it still has amazing “Gili Meno Wall” where you can see turtles swim and giant Gorgonian fans hang among the colorfull corals. At night divers can witness huge Moray Eels and the entertaining Spanish Dancers, baby cuttlefish and a whole array of crustaceans.
The most possible route if you’d like to visit Gili Meno is via Gili Trawangan then jump on a connecting islandhopper boat for the fifteen minute trip over the channel. Usually the boats depart from Gili Trawangan at 9.30am and 4.00pm daily and from Gili Air at 8.30am and 3.00pm (a twenty minute ride).
For you who come from Lombok then you can leave from Bangsal Harbour using public boats for about the twenty-five minute. You should purchase the tickets only from Koperasi Karya Bahari and not from the touts that line the roads into Bangsal. However there’s no fixed schedule for this boat. You can also rent a private boat.
Gili Air Island
Gili Air is the closest one to Lombok and also the smallest island among the other two islands. This island is very popular among honeymoon couples and travelers who seek for a quiet retreat. This island offers various places for snorkeling, Kite surfing and scuba diving. Even more turtles can easily be seen along the coral reef. In this island you can easily find resorts and accommodation.
Gili Air is only thirty minute ride from Gili Trawangan using boats which is leaving from Trawangan harbor at 9.30 am and 4.00 pm and stopping at Gili Meno first before continuing to Gili Air at approximately 9.45 am and 4.15 pm.
As same as the transport to Gili Meno, you can take boat from Lombok to Bangsal, however this is irregular and also unpredictable. Rather than waiting for the boats to fill it’s possible to purchase the remaining tickets and or you can just charter boat.
The swimming is shallow along the east coast with the sand giving way to a coral reef table and is perfectly safe provided you don’t adventure into the channel beyond.
Snorkeling gear is available from the local operators and dive centers will point you in the right direction for some marine adventure.
